Maternity Reflexology
I have had the privilege of training in maternity reflexology with Susanne Enzer, a world renowned reflexologist, former midwife and specialist in pregnancy and childbirth.
During pregnancy a woman’s body endures many physical and emotional changes. Research has shown that regular reflexology treatments help women cope with these changes, and when the time comes can shorten the duration of labour, with many women requiring less pain relief.
Fertility issues
The Association of Reflexologists gathers feedback from their members, and it indicates that over 50% of clients seeking reflexology in connection with conception find themselves pregnant within six months.
In 2008, the percentage of IVF treatments that resulted in a birth (the success rate) according to NHS figures was:
• 33.1% for women under 35
• 27.2% for women aged 35-37
• 19.3% for women aged 38-39
• 12.5% for women aged 40-42
• 4.9% for women aged 43-44
• 2.5% for women aged over 44
The advantage of a reflexology treatment is that fertility issues are not treated in isolation. The overall health of the whole person is addressed during the treatment, which allows for hormones to be balanced and stress levels to be tackled too.
Pregnancy
Pregnancy hormones and the weight of the growing baby can cause some uncomfortable symptoms, which reflexology can help to alleviate. Some women experience:
Anxiety
Nausea and Morning Sickness
Swollen Ankles
Tiredness
Constipation
Heartburn
Back pain
Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction
Is Reflexology safe during pregnancy?
Yes. Reflexology will help to nurture and support both Mum and baby throughout pregnancy, including the first few weeks. It can not and will not cause miscarriage to a viable pregnancy.
What happens during a treatment?
A full consultation is carried out before your first treatment and we also complete a special Maternity questionnaire to help me get a full picture of your health and pregnancy.
I carry out a full treatment and there some techniques that I use specifically for pregnant clients. These include an Endocrine Balance which is a wonderful way of dealing with all the surging hormones and the Lymphatic Technique which is excellent for relieving swollen ankles. There are also lots of specially adapted relaxation techniques to help relax and soothe the aches away.
Can Reflexology induce labour?
This is something I am frequently asked!
Regular reflexology treatments throughout pregnancy will mean that your body is in the best possible condition for labour. Once you have passed your estimated due date (EDD) and providing there are no contra indicatory health reasons (such as a low lying placenta) we can try to ‘prime’ labour to start naturally. There are no guarantees as baby will only come out to meet you when he or she is ready but we have seen some good results.
Post Pregnancy
Once the baby is born pregnancy hormones take a nose-dive and this sudden drop can have a major effect on the new mother’s emotions, as well as all the other demands on the new mother, feeding, caring for the newborn, lack of sleep etc. Reflexology can help calm and ease a new Mummy and balance her hormones and energy levels. It can also help with:
Inadequate lactation
Engorged Breasts
Urine retention
Constipation
Backache
I allow plenty of time for treatments; you are most welcome to bring your baby with you and share a treatment. Being born can be quite stressful for baby too and many feel unsettled and lonely, maybe with headaches from labour. It’s no wonder they cry! Reflexology can help calm unsettled babies whilst reducing tummy aches and reflux. It’s never too early to introduce reflexology!
We work in a very relaxed environment, if baby needs changing or feeding during the treatment that’s absolutely fine.
£40.00 per treatment.
